Located in 597 BC, the play tells the story of Zhao Dun, Prime Minister in the kingdom of King Jinling. Threatened by the popularity of Zhao Du, he calls back Tu Anjia, a cruel and ambitious man who also happens to be the latter’s political rival. Tu Anjia also manages to convince King Jinling of Zhao Dun’s disloyalty, as a result of which his entire family, except his new born son is executed. Deciding to help keep the only heir of the clan alive, Zhao Dun’s retainer Cheng Ying replaces his own child with his master’s son, “the Orphan of the Zhao”. the evil Tu Anjia then kills Cheng Ying’s son and believing his rival’s son to be dead adopts the real Zhao descendent as his godson.
