THE PLAY
Little Eyolf/Little Abaan is a powerful portrayal of self-estrangement. Rita and Alfred/Abhir are a married couple whose son Abaan is disabled because as a child he fell off a table while his parents were making love. This incident leaves Abhir aloof and cold - both emotionally and sexually - towards his wife, and he seeks refuge in writing a book. Rita, on the other hand, feels rejected by her husband and shows her anger in outbursts of violent jealousy towards her son and Abhir’s sister, Asta, to whom he is strongly attracted. One day an old woman known as the “Ratwoman” comes to the house and asks if there is anything gnawing there. Fascinated by her, Alban follows her down to the water where he drowns and dies. At the heart of the play is the tumultuous metaphorical journey that the characters undergo and that enables them to build new lives for themselves. |
