Based on Euripides’ Trojan Women
Every war comes to an end but the suffering of the victims, especially of women who are left to fight for their survival, is endless. Veriattam is about the misery of such women. An old Queen of a defeated land witnesses the suffering of her daughters, daughters-in-law and the women folk who are made slaves and concubines of the victorious force. The queen spits at the soldiers for their act of cowardice as revealed in their murder of her six-month old grandson, the only surviving male in the land. Driven to fury by her pride and sense of outrage, she collects the women around her and inspires them to fight for their dignity and honour.
