Director: Kok Heng Leun
Playwright: Kuo Pao Kun
Written by the Late Mr. Kuo Pao Kun in 1998, The Spirits Play evokes memories of the 20th century Pacific War and explores concepts of guilt, pain and complexity within that context. Five post-war personas in a state of limbo gather at a deserted place. Searching for their way home, they strip to hear each other’s poignant tales of war, loss, endeavors and shattered dreams. Soon haunting memories of guilt and pain are unveiled and they realize that they are inextricably tangled with each other through their choices and consequences. In the light of their new relationships they unleash a volley of questions about the sense and senselessness of war, exploring the notions of honour in death and shame in defeat as opposed to the waste and suffering that war leads to.
