The play in located in a kingdom run by an apathetic and ignorant king, who turns a blind eye to the affairs of his state. When the Kotwal dies, the Pradhan fills the vacant position with his own brother-in-law, over stepping the Halwaldar who is the legitimate claimant of the position. Insulted and wronged, this Hawaldar then decides to use whatever tactics necessary to get what is rightfully due to him. The realization of the plan – facilitated by his sweetheart, the danger-singer Mainavati and a sepoy – exposes the corruption in the system while creating several hilarious scenarios.
The original Marathi production titled Viccha Majhi Puri Kara, was initially conceived as a political satire to raise a voice against the abuse of power by the post-independence government. However, even today the play resonates with audiences who experience and identify with similar situations of misgovernance.
