Director: Saoli Mitra
Playwright: Based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s Crime Passionnel

Located in Illythia, Eastern Europe, towards the end of World War II, the play revolves around Hugo, an enthusiastic and idealistic young Party member who has been ordered to assassinate the traitor-leader, Hoederer. Based on Sartre’s Crime Passionnel (Les Mains Sales) the play is both a political tale of power struggle between corrupt parties and the dramatisation of Sartre’s philosophical beliefs. At its heart lie the personal stories of Hugo and his wife Jessica and the various dynamics of fear, lust, jealousy and love that run through them. While Hugo is torn by doubts and conflicts between his idealism and the means employed to achieve it, Jessica falls in love with Hoederer and decides to save him. But Hoderer is killed by Hugo even while Jessica is in his arms, raising the question of what actually motivated his actions – ideology, passion, love, jealousy or philosophy. Olga: Saoli Mitra
