Set in nineteenth century Calcutta, the play opens in a time characterized by spiritual anarchy, strong rationalism, the fervors of the national movement, and the upsurge of different sects moving away from the idolatry and orthodoxies of an obscurantist Hindu Society. It is at this juncture that Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansadev enters the picture and grows to become a symbol of religious harmony and spiritual freedom.
