Paari Padukalam tries to trace the social history of the ancient Tamilians as seen through Sangam Literature. Although the ancient Tamil kings – Cheras, Chola and Pandiyas – never shared a single united vision for their people or their land, they came together to kill the chieftain of the Parambu Hills, Paari. In a revisiting of that tragic episode, the play explores and tries to understand the pauses and silences that exist in the known and popular versions of ancient Tamil History. As Paari lies wounded and dying in the final act of the play, Kapilar, the poet, makes an entrance and the two exchange views on the evil of war, deception, intrigue and treachery, while offering an insight into the nature of power and the denial of otherness in Tamil society. | G.
