Written in 1890 and believed to be the first Assamese novel, Miri Zeeyoree can be seen as a documentation of the life, language, literature and culture of the Mishing community of Assam.  A love story of  Panei and Jonki, two children who grow up as the best of friends and realize that they are in love with each other, it tells of how they vow to remain together forever, of Panei’s forced marriage to Kamud, the village chief’s son; their repeated attempts to be together; their escape, getting caught and their final trial.  Finally, the community decides to condemn them to death and the two embrace a tragic end, content, nevertheless, to be together till their last breath.
